We had a great experience at Vail Stables! Pedro explained everything we needed to know about the horses perfectly and we were so lucky to have such a beautiful day for the ride. We stopped halfway for a photo opp which was so appreciated. Would definitely come back again!

Absolutely gorgeous ride through the aspens, but unfortunately kindness was missing. Our guide gave great initial instructions to which I was completely attentive. His instructions mostly included how to keep a small distance to the horse in front of you. When mounting, he told me to “leave the horse’s reins alone—he knows what he’s doing.” Right out of the gait my horse tries to pass another, I gently pulled back the reins and was publicly told, “I knew you weren’t listening to my instructions.” Only afterward did he explain what he wanted me to move the horse left to right not brake to prevent passing. I’ve spent years giving trail rides and understand the safety of following instructions. Meanwhile, the rider in front of me repeatedly fell behind, dropped her reins which became tangled around the horse’s legs, and had a cowboy hat fly off twice, spooking my horse. Her horse also kicked mine when I wasn’t allowed to pull my horse back while continuing to move left to right way to close to the horse in front of me. I’m not a cowgirl, he knows way more than I ever will but being publicly shamed instead of simply instructed was dangerous and out of line. We paid nearly $600 for an otherwise beautiful experience that was unfortunately overshadowed by how I was treated.

Julie,Thank you for taking the time to explain what happened. I’m sorry that an otherwise beautiful ride left you feeling embarrassed rather than simply corrected. Our guides do have to be very direct when managing a string of horses, particularly when spacing or horse behavior becomes a safety concern. Sometimes instructions have to be given quickly and loudly enough for everyone to hear. But there is still a difference between being direct and making someone feel singled out, and I understand from your review that this is how the interaction felt to you.I will talk with your guide about what happened. We can always be better at making sure a safety correction is clear without making a guest feel diminished in the process.I’m also sorry the ride became stressful with the difficulties involving the horse and rider ahead of you. Managing riders of different experience levels in one string can sometimes be challenging, but that responsibility belongs to us, not to you.I’m glad you found the ride through the aspens beautiful, but I’m sorry the interaction overshadowed so much of it. Thank you for giving us something worth looking at and improving.Kym

We had an unexpected good time there today. Hidden gem. Our 3 year old petted the goats. Fed them. Took a pony ride. I think most people in vail don’t even know what it is about Friendly staff Definitely a place to bring kids

Thank you! We love “unexpected good time.” Another conversion!!!! That may be the most accurate description of Vail Stables yet.You come up a dirt road with a 3-year-old and somehow end up petting goats, buying goat snacks, taking a pony ride and discovering a place you didn't know existed. We’ve been hiding up here in plain sight for 24 summers. Apparently we need to work on the “plain sight” part.So glad you found us. And thank you for mentioning our staff. They’re pretty wonderful humans. It had to be Betsy. She doesn't know a stranger.
