For a weekend getaway in Austria, I started my trip in Linz and headed straight to Verdi, a Michelin-starred restaurant on the outskirts of the city. Set in a family-run establishment spanning three generations, it immediately sets the tone for an elegant evening. Naturally, I opted for the five-course tasting menu with wine pairing. ️. The meal began beautifully with a refreshing cucumber amuse-bouche, sculpted butter, fragrant olive oil and warm bread, followed by a wonderfully layered carrot and ginger soup that left me wanting more. ️. I also couldn’t resist the daily special: lightly seared beef carpaccio with fresh truffles. An indulgence, but entirely worthwhile. ️. The scallop ceviche, Tom Yum-inspired course and bao bun were all beautifully balanced and, in my opinion, worthy of two Michelin stars. The only slight disappointment was the turbot, which felt restrained after such vibrant dishes and arrived only lukewarm. ️. Both desserts were exquisite, with the white chocolate creation narrowly taking the crown. Let me know which one you’d choose! ️. The wine pairings were another highlight, showcasing Austria’s diversity, from a Weissburgunder Reserve from Falkenstein to a Roter Veltliner from Wagram. ️. Overall, Verdi fully deserves its Michelin star. If there’s anything holding it back from a second, it is the service rather than the kitchen. On a busy evening, wine pairings occasionally lagged behind the dishes and simple touches, like refilling water glasses, were sometimes missed. Even so, Verdi is a destination restaurant well worth seeking out. Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5 Meal type: Dinner Price per person: €100+
