Michelin Guide rating

Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking.
Good standard.

Watabe was founded as a fishmonger but morphed into a restaurant when it became known for the delicious eel the owner grilled at his shop. ‘Enma-ju’, which features both shirayaki, eel grilled without seasoning, and kabayaki, eel dipped and broiled in sweet sauce, served over rice in a box, is a tribute to Konnyaku-Enma, a deity enshrined in nearby Genkaku-ji Temple... This was one of my favourite meals in Japan. I absolutely love unagi and it was perfectly done here, along with some gorgeous pickles, perfectly cooked rice, and delicious sake. They even let me partner order from the a la carte menu as he is not as big of an eel fan as I am so he had sashimi and it was all beautiful. Very relaxing and calm atmosphere in here, feels very upmarket and absolutely worth a visit Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

I never understood rave reviews until now. Here’s my rave review. I want to come here to eat Unaju every week . Melt-in-your-mouth kabayaki, perfectly seasoned and absolutely delicious, I was staring at an empty box before I knew it. The rice that they use is from Chiba and it was perfectly cooked, I savored every little nibble. Every single person there was kind and welcoming, I felt like it could have been a surprise party for me . I also loved being seated in the lovely tatami room; atmosphere 10/10. I want to come to Tokyo more often to eat at Watabe. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: ¥6,000–7,000
