My husband took me to the Welcome Cafe vegetarian restaurant last night at my request for my birthday. We were a little daunted at the menu items at first as everything seemed so new and we weren't sure what to expect. We were not disappointed. My mushroom TomYum entree was just gorgeous, with just the right combination of sour and spicy. Hubby's plate of 8 fried dumplings (which he kindly shared - it was my birthday after all) were crispy on the outside and contained just enough perfectly cooked vegetables in the soft centre. A selection of authentic sauces rounded out the delicious flavour. The highlight of my meal came out next, the Hotplate Spicy Mushroom Balls (a chef's special). I cannot rave about this dish enough. I am a vegetarian for compassionate reasons, not because I don't like the taste and texture of meat. The mushroom jerky (as the owner kindly explained) was the protein in this dish, and when I offered some to my better half (a meat eater), he said he would never have guessed it was not meat. It had the exact texture of slowly stewed beef, and the sauce was to die for. I am on a mission to find mushroom jerky and attempt to recreate this dish. If I fail, I will be back ordering this exact meal again. I could not stop thinking about it all last night.Hubby took a stab in the dark with his meal and ordered the Hotplate Tomyum Crispy Rolls with Cashew nuts and veges. He's not a fan of sushi, and was a little perturbed when the dish came out with a layer of nori on the bottom. However on tasting it together with what we thought may have been some sort of TomYum flavoured soy protein, he said it was the first time he'd ever enjoyed nori, cooked as a crispy skin on what we can only describe as a fantastic substitute for those who miss fish. I'm a huge sushi fan, so it was a massive hit with me, and we swapped meals half and half to enjoy all the new flavours. Definitely a re-order.After our new and exhilarating dining experience was done, it was time for the bill. We were amazed once again, that for an entree and main for us both of some of the most intriguing food we'd ever tried, it all came to a whopping $46. Not going to break the bank any time soon.So we highly recommend the Welcome Chinese Vegetarian Cafe, and will be back very soon with friends and family in tow. We strongly suggest you do the same!
