The Yakuza burger is a must try. It is unlike any other burger. Just the right size with flavors that blow your mind. Add an egg if you're feeling extra! The sushi here is outstanding. I'm counting the minutes until my next visit.
It’s the legendary Yakuza Burger that brings people here, the rest that keeps them! First of all, the burger at Yakuza is super-hyped for good reason: It’s that “THIS is what my mouth wanted!” feeling of pure burger satisfaction. Definitely add the egg, if you’re even remotely inclined that way. ‘Yakuza’ translates to ‘The Extreme Path’ (totally looked that up) and this burger is definitely the destination prize of that path. Yakuza provides both a cozy and communal atmosphere; gorgeous lighting and golden wood with splashes of red. They are equally accommodating to intimate dates, families, groups of friends. (Incidentally, if you want a showstopper super-romance date? Kuza Garden Cottage is a place you can rent on Air Bnb. Just behind the restaurant, it’s an immaculate, romantic cabin for two with an insane backyard. Then you can just wander over and BOW CHICKA BOW WOW) Everyone will have their favorite things based on taste preference, but here are some past-visit standouts: The dreamy, swirly, melty Miso soup THAT HAS CLAMS ALL UP IN IT!!! Two perfect scallops turned into undersea sculpture with shredded filo tempura The Honey Cube cocktail (this is totally what Willy Wonka drinks after work) Shishito Peppers (mild, except that one in a dozen is randomly spicy!!! It’s like Who’s Got The Button!) Yakuza isn’t cheap, gigantic portions, but it’s not meant to be. This is a treat yourself a little, celebrate a little, place. They do probably have the best Value for Flavor Happy Hour around, however! Ohhhhhhh.………..Burrrrrger.
Here's a confession: I don't like sushi. I've tried it a few times and it always makes me gag, even the mundane California rolls. But, my daughter really wanted sushi for her birthday dinner so I decided to take the family to Yakuza Lounge which offers other small plates, including a burger that a friend of mine told me is one of the best in the area. The restaurant is located in a trendy dining area of Portland on 30th and Killingsworth. It's a nice open space with communal tables and chic, Japanese-inspired decor. The murals on the walls are particularly beautiful. There were 5 of us in the party so we ordered a number of plates to share, including 2 salads (kale and radicchio), edamame, scallop tempura, smoked mussels, 3 different sushi rolls (Yakuza, negi sake, and spicy tuna), the pan seared salmon, and, of course, the burger. Now you might think this is a lot of food for 5 people -- I certainly did -- but it wasn't. The servings are exceedingly small in some cases. We left satisfied, but not stuffed and no leftovers. The salads were delicious, I especially loved the radicchio salad which was tossed with a tasty sweet soy dressing. The radicchio was crisp and not bitter, like it often can be. The flavors were very well balanced. The scallop tempura was absolutely divine. The large, fresh scallops are wrapped in shredded filo then fried up, so not the traditional tempura batter that I was expecting yet even tastier. The presentation was beautiful with the pools of spicy sauce underneath and the dark shreds of nori scattered about. The small plate of tempura for $6, though, was really just 1 scallop, so 1 bite for 1 person. We had to order 5 for everyone to have one. The smoked mussels and sushi rolls were beautifully presented; the Yakuza roll stuffed with tempura butternut squash, shishito pepper, and asparagus was especially inventive. The sushi was rolled tight and didn't fall apart when dipping it in sauce or eating it. I was disappointed in the pan seared salmon. While the salmon was nice and fatty and cooked perfectly, it was a small piece of approximately 1″ x 2″. Just look at the size of the salmon compared to the garlic clove or micro green garnish; it seemed to have more garnish than salmon. I had ordered this plate for my main since most of the group was eating sushi. It was delicious, but too small for the price and not enough for a main dish or even enough to share as an appetizer. Of course the Yakuza Burger went to my burger loving boyfriend, who always lets me try his food. It was a good size with a 1/2 pound beef patty that was cooked to order (medium rare). The burger was juicy and delicious but did not live up to the hype for me. There were so few truffled shoestring potatoes on the burger that they could barely be tasted, certainly not the stack that is seen in Yakuza's own promotional photos nor the presentation. And the bun was too thick which masked the overall flavor with entirely too much bread. Definitely not one of the best burgers I've had. Overall, I had a mixed experience with Yakuza Lounge. While much of the food was delicious and I would certainly eat it again, others were a miss and the servings were too small for the prices. On the plus side, service was fantastic and the speed was right on target.
