I never tasted the food in Yama Sushi (now Yama), and I never will: this place is a health hazard. The owner, Mrs. Kim, once boasted to me how her “smart son” would accompany the Monterey city inspector and "cleverly" would redirect the inspector around the unsanitary areas, thus they were able to pass the inspections! I experienced firsthand the sanitary standards of this place when I visited them at their residence, as I was their landlord: the restaurant food items and supplies have been stored in the house and in the garage, and to my horrors, both were rat-infested! I hope the rats are not part of the menu. Of what I have seen, this “restaurant” has no right to serve humans

I have been here 3 times. The food is amazing but each time we go it take 1/2 an hour before a server comes and speaks with us. I have watched them sit people after us and proceed to take their order before ours... the cooks are amazing and very kind but the servers are rude and unorganized... being a server myself i dont generally right poor reviews and i am usually pretty patient especially if the restaurant is busy... but 3 times... thats a bit much... the only reason this review gets a 3 is because the food is amazing... service sucks...
