A few days ago, I decided to try the Yatai House Special Bento at Yatai. On paper, it sounds like a dream — fried rice, sizzling beef, chicken nanban, tempura, karaage, katsu, sushi, maki — a full Japanese spread packed into one wooden box. At BDT 1,250, you naturally expect something impressive. Let’s start with the positives. Presentation? Beautiful. The wooden bento box gives a premium feel, everything neatly arranged, very photogenic. When it arrived at the table, it definitely looked worth the price. But taste is where things didn’t quite land. The fried rice was just average — nothing memorable. The sizzling beef looked flavorful but lacked that deep umami kick you expect from a proper Japanese-style dish. The chicken items were crispy outside, but test is bad inside. The sauces helped, but they couldn’t fully elevate the flavor. Now the sushi — this is where I felt the biggest gap. The salmon didn’t taste as fresh as it should, and the rice texture wasn’t quite right. Sushi rice has a very specific balance and softness, especially if you’ve tried authentic Japanese food. I’ve had Japanese cuisine in Japan and in other countries, so maybe my expectations are higher — but when pricing is premium, quality should match. And one more thing really surprised me. Within just two minutes of serving the food — before I had properly tasted anything — someone came to ask for feedback. I had barely taken a bite. It felt rushed. If you genuinely want honest feedback, it makes much more sense to ask at the end of the meal, not at the beginning. Let customers actually experience the food first. Overall, I don’t mind paying BDT 1,250. If the food is good, price is never an issue. But here, the quality didn’t justify the cost. Would I recommend it? Only if you’re curious and want to try it once. But if you’ve experienced authentic Japanese food, you might find it underwhelming. Food: 1 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4 Price per person: ৳1,200–1,400
