Walking near Sugar Road, visit this restaurant. Nothing can be better than eating good tempura and nicely cooked calamari. Yui is recommended for the competent staff. The terrific service is something these restaurateurs care about. A lot of reviewers mark that prices are affordable for what you get. My family and friends enjoyed a very delicious and fun night at Yui izakaya (Japanese style pub). It’s the longest running izakaya on the island and it’s also well-loved by locals as well (always a good sign!) The first thing I noticed is they left a personal sign on the table with my name on it - thanking me for coming all the way to Yui on Kohama island. A lovely personal touch, don’t you reckon? We ordered a wide variety of dishes including squid-ink fried rice, purple yam chips, agu (local pork) gyoza, Ishigaki beef croquettes, island-style yakisoba with goya, banana fish (gurukun) tempura, island-style tofu salad with sesame dressing, fried chicken and potatoes with tartare sauce, local suchiki pork, and beef liver. My favourite dishes were the banana fish tempura, squid-ink fried rice, and the agu gyoza. Drinks included Orion beer, Ishigaki island craft beer, passionfruit juice, mango juice, shikuwasa (flat lemon) juice, Yaesen awamori mixed with water (how the locals drink it), and frozen lemon sour cocktail. If you’re feeling adventurous you can also try the local habu-shu (Okinawa viper liquor) with a whole snake inside the clear glass bottle). Kids enjoyed rainbow ice cream for dessert and we got a bag of goodies (two coasters, brown sugar candy, and local shio chinsuko cookies) to take home. Reservations are essential - they will pick you up from and drop you off at your hotel (a special feature of izakaya here at Kohama). Oh, and it seems like one of the traditions there is to leave your business card in between the thin wooden slats hanging from the wall. Overall, it was a great five-star experience - yummy food, drink, warm island atmosphere and heartfelt service. We can’t wait to visit Yui again soon - highly recommended!!
