I find Google reviews to be quite reliable. I generally do not write poor reviews because I research before we dine out. We are rarely disappointed with our restaurant choices. We choose only highly rated restaurants and usually have a great experience based on that. Thus I was very disappointed tonight to choose Piccola Osteria Zemian after reading its 4.9 rating on Google reviews only a few days ago. We stopped by the restaurant twice to have lunch but they were fully booked: understandable with the small space (21? seats). Sylvia and Sarah were both very kind to us and we booked a table for 7:20 tonight though we were told ahead of time we would need to finish by 9 pm (because there were large parties following us). No problem. There were no customers in the restaurant when we arrived promptly at 720. Serena was outside smoking when we arrived and told us to go in and take the first table in front of the door. She did not walk us in to seat us. She remained outside. Sylvia greeted us kindly and told us we could take the second table in from the door which was much warmer on a cold night. The dining room was warm, cozy and beautifully decorated for the holidays. I ordered the beet risotto as I had read it was very good in several reviews. Unfortunately the rice was undercooked and too chewy - the beets did have great flavor. I also ordered the pork cheeks with potato purée . The pork was so tender and very delicious. The potatoes lacked salt and had hard lumps - it was not a true purée. It seemed that the risotto and potatoes were not tasted before serving or they would never have been sent to the table that way. Maybe someone was having a bad day in the kitchen. I am a chef and in one restaurant I made risotto and potato purée every single day so I feel qualified to critique them both. Otherwise, the portions were generous and beautifully presented. Serena did not return to our table to ask how everything was - she remained outside. She did return after we finished eating, leaving most of my dinner on the plate. Serena was condescending and dismissive- to us and to the table next to us. Not sure why she chose the hospitality industry. She seemed very unhappy to be there and also the previous time we stopped in to make a reservation We’ve been in Italy for four weeks on this particular trip, and had amazing, incredible meals and service, throughout Veneto, Lombardia, Piedmont, Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. Choosing Piccola Osteria Zemian for the final meal of our trip was not a great idea. Disappointing end to an amazing trip, including our other (5 star) meals in Modena and beyond.
