I live in the area and have come to Aran a fair few times over the years with my husband and with family, so I feel really bad writing this as I really hate leaving bad reviews, but I’ve just had a pretty awkward experience and I actually feel weirdly upset over it. I came in by myself for the first time in about 6 months and ordered the vegan BLT (I’ve had it before, it’s good!). When it arrived I bit into it and realised it had rocket in instead of lettuce which is annoying given it’s a VBLT not a VBRT. It didn’t say anywhere on the board that it would be rocket. For some people this might be fine, but I actually have a mild allergy to rocket (luckily I always carry antihistamines and it isn’t a deadly allergy, but I still experience hives on my chest and a tight scratchy throat). I ended up eating a half slice of the sourdough and some of the vegan bacon, and I took the other half of the sandwich for my husband to eat so it wouldn’t be totally wasted. When I went to pay the girl at the till was really nice and offered me a free bakery item, but I just felt so awkward and wanted to get out of there and I feel like a member of staff should probably have offered to take it off my bill. I hate making a fuss and it was busy with it being peak lunchtime and people queuing and the wait staff clearing tables so I really didn’t want to make their job any harder, but I’ve left feeling pretty upset that I basically paid £15 for a coffee and a slice of bread. It’s pretty rare for me to go out and spend that much on lunch for myself, so it’s stung even more. I guess feedback wise, I feel like it should be made clear that the salad leaf in the VBLT might not be lettuce, rather than just assuming everyone would be okay with it. I didn’t even think to mention the rocket allergy when ordering because I honestly thought a sandwich that says it’ll have lettuce in (and the last few times I had it over the last couple of visits, it’s been lettuce) would just have lettuce in. Food: 1 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4 Meal type: Brunch Price per person: £10–20 Recommendation for vegetarians: Somewhat recommend Vegetarian offerings: Clearly labelled vegetarian dishes
