Asahi Teppanyaki in Ikebukuro always feels like the kind of place where something’s being celebrated. Every time I’ve gone, I’ve seen couples on dates, birthday parties, anniversaries and people quietly toasting with wine. It’s counter only, the lighting is dim and the noise level is just right enough to feel lively but not so loud that you can’t talk. Wherever you sit, you’ve got a front row view of the grill, which makes the whole meal feel like a small show. I went for the Asahi Premium course this time, with live lobster and chateaubriand, which comes in around 23,100 yen. It’s definitely on the expensive side, but I’ve come to the same conclusion every visit. It’s worth it. The wagyu is great every time, cooked perfectly to medium rare with a nice balance of fat and flavor. They plate it with sweet soy sauce, garlic chips, wasabi and salt flakes, so you can switch up how you eat it bite by bite. Beyond the meat, my favorite part is still the omurice. Seeing it being made on the teppan is where the chef really shows off a bit more than just slicing meat. The way it gets folded and draped over the table all at once is kind of fun to watch. It ends up comfort food rich, but you still feel like you’re getting a proper course, not a throw in. The pacing of the meal is smooth and the service is very nice. The staff don’t speak flawless English, but they understand enough to get things right and the whole vibe is polite without being stiff. I’ve had the same chef all four times I’ve been here, and he always has a kind, easy face for foreigners, which makes it feel less intimidating even if you’re eating in a language you’re not fluent in. The only real downside is the ventilation. It’s a bit weak and by the end of the meal the room can get pretty smoky, which clings to your clothes and hair a little. But even with that, I still walk out thinking it’s one of the better teppanyaki spots in Ikebukuro if you’re in the mood for a treat. Meal type: Dinner Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3

We were served by a young chef. I observed he did not wear a hat while cooking for us thus allowing the possibility of hair dropping on our food. The food is not great and the chef struggles and displays confused behaviour to perform the teppanyaki cooking. The ingredients is also mediocre at best. Despite charging ¥36000 or USD240 for two paxs we feel it do not deliver the value of a decent Teppanyaki restaurant. I do not recommend this restaurant for the food and value.
