Intimate vegetarian cafe with a bohemian vibe. Walking down the main tourist traffic street in Nishi-Ogikubo, this cafe is easy to miss. You have to be focused to see the small, unassuming sandwich board with their white A4 sized restaurant name. The restaurant has four tables, accommodating two people each, and the menu is simple, most of the menu devoted to the ‘Cafe Ilo set’, which includes one of the three soups of the day, rice or a ~3 slices of rye bread, and a side order sampler. Everything was super healthy and well-prepared. I tried the pumpkin potage, and it was creamy, flavorful, and filling, hitting the trifecta of my favorite soup attributes. I also tried okra with tons of veggies soup, and I loved it! The okra was cubed to be just bite-sized, and the amount of vegetables in the soup was astonishing, every vegetable, especially the potato the perfect consistency, flavor, and texture. Everything I ate seemed expertly handcrafted with seasonal veggies with a hint of spice. What’s more is that every flavor complimented the one before. I sampled an iced cafe au lait with my lunch, and it was a touch smokey and medium bodied, another perfectly played note. I can’t rave enough about the symphony of flavor and textures that I presume the owner/chef composed for my lunchtime medley. The owner was kind and open but serious about her craft. You may end up waiting a bit for the hometown dishes to be served during peak busy times, but it’s worth the wait. I don’t go to this neighborhood often, but every time I am, I am making a point of going to this cafe. Price per person: ¥1,000–2,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Vegetarian options: It's a veggie restaurant, so pretty much everything is veggie friendly, but the owner/chef will double check with you about the strictness (lacto/ovo) of your veggie lifestyle when confirming your order.
