Dressed herring is also called ‘herring under a fur coat’. It’s a Russian layer salad of purple color cooked from the pickled herring, boiled potatoes, boiled carrots, boiled beetroot and onions with mayo. To decorate the salad, Russians cover it with the grated boiled eggs. It’s usually cooked for winter holidays such as NY and Christmas (January 7th in Russia).
