The single chance to try shirako (in this case cod milt) made the meal completely worthy. Creamy yet not fatty, fishy yet not overwhelming, soft yet not melting. This is a must try ingredient that anyone who travelled to Japan for its food cannot miss. The rest of the meal was on pretty high standard. Amongst the best I dishes I would mention the grapefruit covered by cream cheese and prosciutto, the snow crab spring roll and the braised amberjack. The meal was finished with a big plate of soba noodles, which is nothing special to me, and I believe a claypot rice could have been better. The plates are carefully selected and the presentation is beautiful. I must mention the attention by the staff as one the best, coolest, more intimate and fun after many meals and a long period of time in Japan. We had a nice conversation, we exchanged opinions, I provided my point of view on the dishes served, and I was even invited to a cup of sake. All things considered, it made a marvelous night and dinner at Jicon. If I ever come back to Kobe I would like to visit them again and see how they perform after a longer working time. The 8.800 ¥ course offers a good balance of cost, quantity and quality. As a counterpart I think that since this restaurant goes beyond classic Japanese cuisine, and at this range of prices, the soba dish is too plain and simple. Also, and even though dessert is not part of most Japanese menus, including any simple sweet final dish as fruit or chocolate or even candy would satisfy many customers (at least the western ones).
