We visited this restaurant on a weekday evening, hoping to enjoy some authentic Japanese sushi. Upon entering, we were immediately stopped by (what we assume was) the owner, who pointed to a laminated sign on the wall. The sign, written in English, stated that reservations were required, that only cash was accepted (which we had), and that the owner only speaks Japanese. We politely tried to explain that we didn’t have a reservation and only understand and speak really limited Japanese, as we are foreign visitors. We truly regret not being able to speak the language better, and we approached the situation with as much respect as possible. Unfortunately, there was no real attempt to communicate with us or show any flexibility. The restaurant appeared completely empty, yet we were promptly and firmly asked to leave (at least in a polite way). While we understand and respect house rules and language barriers, the situation felt unnecessarily unwelcoming. We couldn’t help but feel that our being foreigners played a role in the refusal, even though we were prepared to follow the other conditions. Of course, everyone is free to interpret this situation as they see fit—but for us, it was a disappointing experience in a country where we’ve otherwise felt so welcomed. Atmosphere: 1
