"We are the coffee population" One of the original cafes in Daegu’s more recent café hotspot, Coffee Population is located at the beginning of Jin-gol alleyway (진골목) in the centre of Daegu. The area feels similar somewhat to Seoul’s Ttukseom (뚝섬) with an eclectic mix of hole-in-the-wall takeaway, lounge style brunch cafes and specialty filter coffee bars. Now in their third year of business the café has established a strong following of locals who come to try their ever-changing mix of guest coffee blends and single origins from both international and domestic roasters. This now includes an eclectic mix of some of the following brands: 1) Andersen & Maillard (Denmark) 2) Coffee Collective (Denmark) 3) Heart Roasters (USA) 4) Coava Coffee Roasters (USA) 5) No Doubt / 노다웃 (South Korea) 6) Coffee Supreme (New Zealand) 7) Suan Coffee / 수안커피 (South Korea) 8) Dukes Coffee (Australia) The logo tells an interesting story into the brand identity behind Coffee Population: in traditional Chinese character Hanja, 人 means person and 口 entrance or mouth. In the Korean alphabet Hangeul it points directly to ㅅ and ㅁ, the two characters that make up the owner’s name Kim Seon-mi (김선미). Standing out on the top of the espresso machine is a cup by the popular Korean artist “Moonsub”; originally from Jeju island Moonsub recently returned from several years living in New York to base himself in Seoul’s Yeonnam-dong. Examples of his work can be seen in dozens of specialty cafes across the country with some brands even printing them for permanent use (Naïve Brewers in Busan or Baram Coffee in Seoul for example). Behind the counter: La Marzocco GB5 2-Group, Mahlkönig EK43 and Victoria Arduino Mythos One grinders.
