The manager actually made my day the other week, when I told her that her vegan jam sponge was the best id ever had, im not vegan but it was so tasty and just like a dairy cake which i was so impressed by, and she gave me her recipe and upheld a genuine conversation about the process and why she did it, which was sweet. She is thorough, to the point, in the most respectful way. Ive had salads, pancakes, macha latte (ps recommend big time as had never tried before!) And occasionally, every so often, they put on comedy nights too (even if they don't anymore, still a lovely place). They have a garden, and the toilets are spick and bloody spam. AJ's makes me happy, it is true to Roath by engaging with the local community, but they aren't trying to be too much either, they're honest to their cause, and polite while doing so.
I have been turned away for them deciding to close the kitchen before, but so what? Every establishment does that every so often, people need to realise that human beings run cafes, not robots, and not everything is a chain trying to be everything all at once. If you're a down to earth person, looking for a true honest tasty place to grab a bite while also supporting an independent business run by what I think are Roath Ladies-who cares where they're from they're lush; AJ's is the one, without a doubt !
Love to the staff and love to the cafe, hospitality is HARD, you guys are ace <3
