Update: San Francisco has indeed failed. I was willing to slog through COVID times. I still love the city despite its flaws and challenges. But y'all done up and done it now. Automat has closed. This is a tragedy. We have collectively failed. Are we no longer a civilized society, one that appreciates a superior hamburger, grasped with both hands and held high, juices dripping freely upon this shining city on a hill, known as the city by the bay? Now it is only my tears -- which you will find -- shed upon the soil of yerba buena -- tears of longing and despair -- a mirrored reflection of a burger that is no more.

This is turning into the summer of going to restaurants before they close. They were out of quite a bit of things when I went, but I managed to snag a Cheezy Buddy and chicken sandwich on sliced bread (because they were out of buns), fries, a slice of garlic pretzel focaccia, and an iced brown sugar latte. The fried chicken sandwich was the best, it had a flavorful crunch and the meat was moist (though a tad salty). The Cheezy buddy probably would taste better on the intended bun and eaten hot and fresh. The fries were shoestring fries which surprised me since I saw other pictures of thicker fries, but they were good. The pretzel focaccia was nice and chewier than regular foccacia. I liked how the brown sugar latte was not too sweet.

Automat is closing and they only gave their staff  ONE WEEK notice and offered zero severance.  SHAME on the owners.  Unfortunate that the owners couldn't be considerate and give their hard working employees more respect.
