Background Hidden behind a retail storefront in George Town, Backdoor Bodega has become one of the pioneers of Penang’s modern cocktail movement. It was among the earliest Penang bars to be recognised by Asia’s 50 Best Bars and has since received accolades for its storytelling-driven cocktails and sustainability initiatives. Ambience The backroom is compact, dimly lit in that flattering speakeasy way, with exposed brick and a soundtrack of 90s hip hop setting a loose, nocturnal pulse. The crowd is a confident mix of local regulars and in-the-know travelers, all riding the high of having found the secret door. Service Service was one of the stronger aspects of the experience. The staff was friendly, attentive, and genuinely enthusiastic. Interactions felt natural rather than scripted. Questions were answered confidently, and recommendations were offered without the usual pretentiousness that sometimes accompanies highly ranked cocktail bars. Food/Drink Many drinks incorporate local ingredients and references to iconic local flavours, creating a menu that doubles as a liquid guide to the island. The cocktails I tried were good, though perhaps not as revelatory as their reputation might suggest. The local influences were evident and thoughtfully executed, but some drinks felt more conceptually interesting than memorable on the palate. Overall Good for a night out with friends where the vibe matters as much as the glass in your hand. The cocktails were good rather than extraordinary. The experience, however, remains worth seeking out. Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Fun little cocktail bar/speakeasy hidden at the back of a shop. Music was great, service was attentive, and the cocktail menu was an entire book! Fun play on Malaysianisms. Clearly popular as there was a queue to get in by the time we left - highly recommend making a reservation especially on weekends & public holidays. Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

If you’re craving delicious cocktails with a touch of fashion, this is a must-visit. The reservation process was simple and seamless. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed by name, which immediately made the experience feel personal. As I’m currently on crutches and travelling alone, I particularly appreciated how comfortable and welcome the team made me feel. The atmosphere is genuinely friendly, and even other guests were happy to strike up conversations. This has been one of the best hospitality experiences I’ve had anywhere in Southeast Asia. I would recommend coming here not only for the cocktails, but for the warm and welcoming experience. Thank you so much. Price per person: RM 120–140 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
