Oh, @barfly.kz is giving me exactly the sort of contradiction I love. One minute I’m wandering around a museum contemplating art and culture, the next I’m on the 26th floor contemplating whether I could happily move in for the view alone. After a few hours exploring Almaty’s Museum of Arts, a fellow traveller and I took our guide’s recommendation and headed to Barfly for a well-earned break. It’s safe to say the guide knew what they were talking about. The first thing that strikes you is the view. Almaty sprawls out below, framed by mountains that seem to appear and disappear depending on the mood of the weather. The second thing that strikes you is the staff. Warm, welcoming, excellent English and always smiling. Travelling becomes infinitely easier when people are genuinely pleased to help. I ordered an iced latte which arrived looking far more sophisticated than I felt after a day of sightseeing. My fellow traveller, who takes her burrata very seriously, ordered the burrata with tomatoes and a lemongrass and passionfruit lemonade. The verdict from the resident burrata connoisseur? Very happy indeed. We also shared a basket of golden gougères (or giant cheese puffs if, like me, you prefer your culinary terminology less French and more practical). Served with truffle infused whipped butter that disappeared alarmingly quickly, they were light, airy and dangerously easy to keep eating. The space itself feels elegant without being intimidating. Comfortable seating, dramatic lighting, floor-to-ceiling windows and enough style to make me briefly consider whether I should have changed out of my walking shoes. Art gallery. Coffee. Burrata. Mountain views. Friendly staff. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon in Almaty. Still wandering. Attention to Barfly Management: I don’t usually leave bad reviews, but my experience at Barfly, Kazakhstan, on New Year’s Eve was extremely disappointing. We are travelers and decided to spend New Year in Kazakhstan as a last-minute plan. We stayed at Kazakhstan Hotel and booked a New Year gala at Barfly, expecting a memorable celebration. We paid an advance payment for a specific table that we personally selected and even took a photo as proof. Upon arrival, we were told that this was not the table we booked and that it had supposedly been reserved two months earlier. I was shocked, as it was clearly the exact table we reserved. We were then placed in a corner, as if we were unimportant guests. Despite showing proof, the staff continued to deny their mistake. What made the situation worse was the lady manager’s rude and unprofessional behavior. She told us that if we did not accept the table they were offering, we could leave. This was completely unacceptable, especially on New Year’s Eve after paying in advance. Although the booking was stated as non-refundable, they claimed they could refund us only according to their own terms. Instead of simply admitting their mistake, they made us feel as though we were at fault, which was very upsetting. Later, after the guests occupying our original table left, a male manager and a waitress approached us and asked if we wanted to move to the table we had originally booked. This was extremely insulting and demonstrated a clear lack of accountability. To make matters worse, when we ordered champagne, the staff unnecessarily emphasized the price, which felt disrespectful as if questioning whether we could afford it. On top of that, we were charged for items we didn’t even consume. We had no real option but to stay and pretend to enjoy the night. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the worst New Year’s Eve we have ever experienced. My husband and I went on a date at the restaurant. Reserving a table was easy, and the staff was accommodating. Great cocktails, decent food, and our waiter, Zhandos, was very nice and helpful. The things I didn’t like were the complete lack of air circulation and the fact that people are allowed to smoke inside, so the first thing I noticed upon entering was a strong cigarette smell. Also the staff kept pushing us to order more food, drinks, and dessert. Overall, I would recommend this place, though it does have some drawbacks Price per person: ₸25,000–30,000 Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4
