Ordered the steak and ale pie and chips. The chips were crackling rather than potato one expects. It was like it was the end of the bag that should have been thrown away. The pie was gluttonous rather than full of meat. The place was dead so service should have been fine but the waiter shuffled around the room with no pride in his job or in the establishment he is representing. No check-ins nothing. Very disappointed Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £20–30 Food: 1 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 1

I visited The Basking George in Harrogate with what I can only describe as optimism, a mistake I won’t be making again. On arrival, we seated ourselves and were promptly directed to order at the bar. Now, I can only assume this system exists so you have to pay upfront presumably before you realise what’s about to happen to you. We ordered the “sharing platter,” and when we asked how big it was, we were confidently told it was “huge” — enough for 2–3 people. I’d say that’s technically true if those people had already eaten, weren’t hungry, or were purely there for emotional support. In reality, it was a modest meal for one. The platter arrived first, and then we waited. And waited. Seven minutes later, the sides made their grand entrance, presumably after completing a slow pilgrimage through the Yorkshire countryside. By this point, the main had gone cold, the gravy had developed a thick skin you could reupholster furniture with, and the meat was so overcooked I suspect the chef had personally chased the cow into exhaustion before cooking it. Everything was dry, tasteless, and had clearly been cooked with all the enthusiasm of a Monday morning meeting. We asked for a plate several times, but the request seemed to vanish into the void, much like our hopes for a decent meal. Then came the pizza, fashionably late, stone cooked, i mean cooled, and aggressively mediocre. It was generously topped with a mountain of rocket, which I can only assume was there to distract from the crimes happening underneath. To top it all off, the place was absolutely freezing. I’m not sure if it was a cost-saving measure or part of the theme, but dining in a coat wasn’t quite the ambience we had in mind. In summary: poor food, baffling service, and an atmosphere that could double as a walk-in fridge. Do yourself a favour, go for a drink if you must, but under no circumstances order food. 1 star (and that’s being generous) Price per person: £30–40 Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 2
