Me and my mom had a fantastic time at Barry Fish. The welcome was warm, the staff inviting, knowledgeable and kind and the overall atmosphere beautiful. The food was incredible and I was amazed at how much we got to the price, let alone the beautiful quality. The cocktails were delightful! I can’t wait to come back! I’m going start by prefacing that I may come across that I’m being negative, but I truly enjoyed myself and the main dishes were the best I had during my 4 night stay in Edinburgh. Anyways, I felt like I was being pressured to order more at least from the start, I was pretty clear I did not want any drinks or starters, but kept being pressed on it. My thought is if the restaurant needs to do a minimum spend for dinner they need to make it clear because that’s the way it came across. Secondly, I was a bit disappointed by the dessert menu. There was only three options and one of the options was vanilla ice cream with a chocolate chip cookie, and while I’m sure it’s delicious with somewhat of a spin, I came here to explore more unique items like the rest of the menu and wellsomething I can get on Victoria Street shouldn’t be on the menu. Maybe I’m being pretentious, but come on, it’s ice cream and a cookie, they can do better. The lemon tart that I did order was satisfying and did the job though. Speaking of being wowed, the good news is the mains were insane. The smoked fish/half shelled lobster was really the best thing ever, I think you’d be crazy not to order it. The smoked cod was also wonderful and the buttered kale underneath was prepared with the most care. I hope I didn’t sound like I’m disparaging Barry Fish and I had a negative experience, as I mentioned I loved it, but there was a few things that missed the mark. I would be back no question.
