Brawn is nearing institution territory on Columbia Road, and a midweek visit proves the E2 atmosphere is as lively as ever. The small plates outstripped the mains here. Starters were stunning, specifically the melon, cucumber, and stracciatella, and a beautifully balanced bluefin tuna with peppers. But the larger plates stumbled: lobster spaghetti came out punch-in-the-face salty, and the bavette with corn and girolles lacked the delicate sophistication of the opening dishes. The meal cost just over £200 for 3 people with 500ml of Rosè, which puts it at high end at the increasingly competitive Columbia Road. Local competition is definitely hotting up with Tiella Trattoria a very strong impression nearby. Still, along with Tiella and Campania, Brawn keeps this stretch of E2 remarkably well-fed. We’re spoiled for choice. Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: £60–70

Absolutely exceeded our expectations. The food was phenomenal, as hoped for. We shared both starters and main so we could taste lots - not one dish disappointed. We particularly loved the anchovies. However, food aside there was also a fantastically interesting wine list with lots of interesting and organic wines. Also some really pleasing and unusual dessert wine pairing choices. The service was impeccable, from the fantastic greeting on the door but also throughout the meal, tue staff were friendly, knowledgeable but not at all overbearing or pretentious. Exactly the right level of care throughout the evening. A wonderful night! Thanks, Brawn. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £70–80
