Best steak au poivre I’ve ever had, great tallow fries, other delicious and interesting dishes, solid cocktails and good wine, in a beautiful setting. Excellent, friendly service and a fun vibe. Only downside is they host a lot of events so make sure you make a res or have a back-up plan when walking in! Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $50–60 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Nestled in the heart of the Hill, Butterworth’s is the kind of establishment that feels like it has been there for decades, despite its polished execution. With its striking "Bar Américain" facade and gold-leaf signage, it beckons passersby into a space that perfectly balances Old World sophistication with the high-energy pulse of D.C.’s political epicenter. It’s no wonder this spot has become a fast favorite for Congressional staffers looking to decompress after a long day under the Dome. The moment you step inside, you are enveloped in an atmosphere that is both cozy and cinematic. The decor is a masterclass in lived-in luxury, think ornate pressed-tin ceilings, an impressive antler chandelier, and walls adorned with eclectic touches like vintage sheet music and a framed portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The lighting is perhaps the venue’s best feature; the soft, warm glow of flickering candles and fringed lampshades creates an intimate, almost clandestine vibe that invites long conversations. Our evening began with a round of classics. The Negroni was punchy and perfectly balanced, while the Manhattan arrived with the kind of silky, boozy precision you expect from a top-tier bar. For those looking for something steadier, the Guinness was poured with a creamy, thick head that would satisfy any purist. We transitioned to a bottle of the House Red (a Kermit Lynch Côtes du Rhône), which was an excellent, approachable choice that paired beautifully with the dim lighting and plush velvet seating. However, the undisputed highlight of the night was the Black Pearl. Suggested and designed by Mr. Campbell, this cocktail is a daring mix of rye, rum, banana, and coffee. It is complex, tropical yet moody, and served as the perfect conversation piece for the table. The service at Butterworth’s is what truly elevates the experience. The staff manages to be attentive without being intrusive, maintaining a professional "Bar Américain" standard while offering genuine, expert recommendations like the Black Pearl. Whether you’re a staffer looking to talk shop over a pint or a local seeking a romantic corner for a bottle of wine, Butterworth’s delivers an authentic, high-quality experience. It is a sophisticated addition to the Capitol Hill scene, proving that even in a city of constant change, a well-made cocktail and a candlelit room will always be in style.
