Before visiting certain restaurants, I check if they have a happy hour. Why? Because it gives me a lot of insight into the chef and the food. I look at whether the cocktails are crafted with care or thrown together carelessly just because it’s happy hour. Since happy hour usually takes place in the bar area, it also gives me a chance to observe the restaurant from a vantage point. My path crossed with City Fish Market during happy hour last weekend. It was a place I had wanted to visit for a long time but hadn't managed to get to. Naturally, the happy hour was in the bar section. It had just started when we arrived, so it wasn't crowded; there was just a couple and a woman sitting alone. We picked a spot we liked and sat down. Our bartender was an older gentleman; he welcomed us warmly and was friendly. My husband and I quickly ordered cocktails and decided to look at the menu. Our drinks arrived, and we ordered some food as well (shrimp, calamari...). The cocktails were lackluster and sloppily made—they tasted almost alcohol-free. He brought the wrong cocktail for me. I didn't say anything and drank it anyway, but I couldn't help wondering: how could he get one of only two orders wrong when the rush hadn't even started yet? He tried to laugh it off and made a joke—we laughed, too—but it wasn't a great experience. The bartender prepared our drinks beautifully. Then our food and bread arrived. The bread was truly delicious; it was wonderful with the butter :) However, the same couldn't be said for the shrimp and calamari. In fact, I didn't even realize I was eating shrimp until my husband pointed it out. They were so tiny (look at the photos), and the calamari was minuscule, too. Plus, it was very dry. We tried our luck by ordering another round of cocktails, but they were disappointing again. We left and went somewhere else to eat. Don't be fooled by those fancy photos by the lake, either :) Would I come here again? I don't think so. Food: 3 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 2 Price per person: $50–60 Parking space: Plenty of parking Kid-friendliness: No Wheelchair accessibility: I have no idea.
