Er Caffettiere is located right in front of the Metro Line B Cavour station direction Termini ( Rebibbia/Jonio terminal), in an area of Rome with significant historical depth. Today it may feel like a busy, central spot, but in ancient times this area was part of the Subura (or Suburra), one of the most densely populated districts of the city during the Roman Republic and especially the Imperial period (roughly from the 3rd century BC to the 4th century AD). The Subura was not an elite neighborhood. It was a working-class district known for its insulae—multi-story apartment buildings that housed artisans, merchants, and everyday residents. The streets were narrow, lively, and often crowded, with a strong commercial and social atmosphere. Ancient sources even describe it as noisy and chaotic, reflecting the intensity of daily life in that part of Rome. What makes Er Caffettiere particularly interesting is that this history is still visible inside the space. While having a coffee, you can actually see preserved sections of the floor from an ancient Roman house. This offers a tangible connection to the past and gives a clearer idea of how these residential structures once looked and functioned.
