Fabulous food and host. Really interesting local dishes. Management connected to nearby Michelin star restaurant. Stumbled in here for coffee in the morning and came back for best lunch of our whole trip. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Meal type: Lunch Price per person: €20–30

Disappointing return visit We first visited I Banchi in 2024 and were very impressed. Unfortunately, our return visit was a very different experience. Although one dish was excellent, much of the food felt poor value, and the service was dismissive. One member of our party ordered the “Prawn Cocktail with Sicilian Bloody Mary” tapas. It consisted of a single prawn served on a spoon. Two of us chose the “Soft and Crunchy Cod Fish,” which was a small cheese biscuit topped with piped cod-flavoured cream. Pleasant enough, but certainly nothing special. At around €5 each, both felt rather ridiculous. The glazed pork neck with Modica chocolate was excellent and easily the highlight of the meal. However, the “Mediterranean BBQ Vegetables,” listed as a main course, consisted of just three small rolls of wafer-thin aubergine and courgette. When we asked the waiter whether this really was the main course, he simply said “yes,” turned on his heels and walked away. There was no interest in whether the diner was satisfied. The drinks were equally disappointing. As well as some wine, we specifically ordered the local alcohol-free beer named on the menu but were instead served Beck’s Blue—a cheap and very ordinary substitute. We sent it back. I Banchi’s website says its cuisine is “never ordinary” and prepared with “exemplary care.” Sadly, that was not our experience that evening. Some dishes seemed more concerned with presentation than generosity, and the indifferent service made matters worse. It would be a shame if the restaurant were to follow the familiar pattern of starting well and then becoming complacent. Our first visit showed what I Banchi is capable of, but on this occasion it fell well short of that standard. A tip for anyone staying in Ragusa Ibla: try I Sangiovari instead, just a short walk away. We ate there the following evening and found it to be in a completely different league.
