A disappointing meal, unfortunately. The Jewish-style and Roman artichokes were genuinely delicious, and the house wine was good. Those were the highlights. Service was the main issue. We asked for water when the server first greeted us, but it didn't arrive until over 30 minutes later, after bread, wine, and appetizers had already been served. We'd also planned to order the lasagna, but it had sold out early in the evening, so we went with a meatball dish and a bolognese instead, both meant to come with side salads. The salads never arrived, though we appear to have been charged for them. The pasta dishes themselves were fine but unremarkable… nothing that stood out. What really soured the evening was at checkout, when my husband was asked to add a tip three separate times by the server. We are well aware that tipping is not customary here and we found it quite inappropriate of the waiter to insist on one, especially when the service did not warrant it. Other tables nearby, who appeared to be locals, seemed to get noticeably more attentive service throughout the meal. We've had wonderful meals elsewhere in Rome during this trip, but this one missed the mark on several fronts. Food: 3 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 4 Meal type: Dinner

A wonderful meal. Elegant and delicious prepared classic cuisine. A wonderful off the beaten path location. Quiet outdoor location for our late September night. Staff is quick to help and provide lovely suggestions. The lamb had the crisp skin i hope to recreate at home, the Cacio e pepe is still singing on my pallet. Definitely have the chicorey. Go and enjoy this beautiful food. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Our experience at Il Fantino was deeply disappointing. What should have been a pleasant lunch in Rome was overshadowed by service that felt unnecessarily rude, dismissive, and at times openly sarcastic. The waiter at the entrance insisted on speaking Italian in a way that came across as belittling, only for it to become clear shortly afterwards that he speaks fluent English perfectly well. Rather than making guests feel welcome, his manner seemed designed to make them feel uncomfortable. The food did little to redeem the experience. The fried cod bore little resemblance to what one would reasonably expect: it was heavily battered, poorly cooked inside, unpleasantly chewy, and excessively salty. It was, quite simply, not enjoyable. What remained most striking, however, was the overall tone of the service — loud, theatrical, and self-satisfied rather than attentive or professional. Good hospitality requires warmth, grace, and respect for the customer. Sadly, this establishment offered none of the above. I would not return. In a city full of restaurants with genuine charm and quality, Il Fantino falls painfully short. Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 2
