I’m thoroughly impressed by this restaurant. The only complaint I have is that Google doesn’t allow me to give 6 stars, otherwise I would rate this place 6 out of 5. I visited Kinmata at noon. The restaurant is near the city center of Kyoto so it’s very easy to find. And once I step in, the atmosphere is elegant, warm but also modern. The owner / chef and the staffs all speak English, and are all very attentive and helpful. For every dish that is served, the chef gives an explanation about the ingredients and the cooking methods. The presentation is pretty and clean, and the courses taste fresh and balanced. I especially like the eel tempura and the seafood soup with 2 types of fish and radish- they are not too salty and they really bring out the original flavour of the ingredients. With the chef’s recommendation I ordered a type of Kyoto sake that’s not too sweet (you can find the dryness level on the menu too). The sake has a fruity but also sophisticated flavour, that compliments the seafood very well. The chef also shares about the history of the restaurant - his family has been running for 100+ years and has been there as a Ryokan since Kyoto was the capital, which is really interesting and impressive to say the least. Overall this restaurant set a very high bar for traditional Japanese food. I believe it will be very hard to find another place that’s superior than this not only for the price, but also for the excellent quality and the service. Service: 5
