Best sushi spot I’ve ever been to. The food is fenomenal and the service is great. The yellow tail jalapeño appetizer is amazing and I can’t say I have a favorite roll because they are all soooo good. Kisso Asian Bistro [KAB]. (0.67 star). BLUF: My review is for the "Japanese Food" ONLY. I'm sure the Thai and Chinese and whatever else cuisines they have here are much better??!! "Shot through the heart And you're to blame Darlin', you give love a bad name An angel's smile is what you sell You promise me heaven, then put me through hell Chains of love got a hold on me When passion's a prison, you can't break free!" - You Gave Love A Bad Name by Bon Jovi ---------- Did you know?: Nabeyaki-udon (鍋焼きうどん) is actually a "hot pot", not a stir-fry even though yaki (焼き) in Japanese means stir-fry?! Nabe (鍋) means clay-pot in Japanese and is what is used to make and serve authentic nabeyaki udon. Although the ingredients differ from prefecture to country, the most common ingredients are tempura, kamaboko (fish cake), and (boiled) chicken. ---------- If it were up to me, I would name this place "Kiss-O-Death" Asian Bistro. KAB literally killed my desire to enjoy my beloved Japanese cuisine in Old Town!! I really really really feel that Kisso has done a HUGE disservice to the Japanese culinary world. I should've known better when I ordered the nabeyaki udon and chicken tatsutaage that this was a bad omen. The cashier asked me to repeat the order 5 times, point it out to her on the menu, and then bring one of the kitchen members out to ask me what that was (I'm not exaggerating)??!! Ummm... hello?! THESE ITEMS ARE ON YOUR MENU??!! Granted their menu is very broad which usually isn't a good thing!! I prefer places that specialize in a few specialities. But apparently I didn't get the message. KAB is a Japanese, Chinese, and Thai restaurant... *SIGH* To be fair, KAB was one of the very first "Asian" restaurants we tried in Old Town and to be honest NONE of the "Asian" restaurants afterwards were much better. Just to be clear, when I say "Asian" I'm strictly speaking of Japanese and Chinese cuisine. I would add Korean food to that but alas, there is NO KOREAN RESTAURANTS IN OLD TOWN!! Sad face. Nabeyaki Udon. (0 stars). This is the WORST nabeyaki udon I've ever had IN MY LIFE. The noodles were so bloated from sitting in water for hours prior to. The broth was flavorless. The tempura was soggy and had absolutely no seasoning. The shrimp was rubbery. The egg was hard boiled. Just an awful sad excuse of a dish. How dare KAB call this tasteless waste of food a nabeyaki udon!! Sushi. (1 star). I ordered the Sushi Deluxe because I was desperate for some sushi and because I didn't realize until we ordered that KAB definitely doesn't specialize in Japanese cuisine. I ultimately decided to give the sushi 1 star because it did "resemble" sushi. I grew up in Massachusetts (MA) and then Hawaii (HI). Oddly enough the two main locations that source tuna and seafood to the country. I also find it funny that their abbreviations spell "MAHI", so I guess it was kismet that I should know my fish and shellfish... The fish and sashimi sold here is not even sushi quality. All their fish is frozen and the texture is mealy. The quality of the sushi rice was just as disappointing. Some of the rice was crunchy and some was soggy. Very unpalatable!! Chicken tatsutaage. (1 star). If KAB just called this fried chicken cubes, I would've given this dish 3 stars. It's actually fried nicely and the panko is crispy and light (not too oily)!! However, like the other items on the Japanese cuisine list, this dish is deceiving. For those who are not familiar, tatsutaage is different from karaage which more people are familiar with. Tatsutaage is made with chicken which is seasoned with soy sauce and mirin sweet cooking rice wine. (Some variations include adding garlic and ginger to the marinade prior to frying.) The chicken is coated with potato starch and then deep-fried. Karaage is made with chicken thinly coated with potato starch and/or wheat flour and then deep-fried at a high-temperature. I prefer tatsutaage... These chicken cubes have absolutely no seasoning which is fine but the batter itself is NOT TATSUTAAGE SO STOP CALLING IT THAT!! Grunt... ---------- Before I get a hemorrhage in my brain from getting so upset at the "Asian" food at KAB, I'll just leave it at this... STAY AWAY FROM THE "JAPANESE FOOD" HERE!!!
