Ludens was one of the most memorable and unique meals I’ve had anywhere in the world. The dinner began with an extensive prix fixe menu. I genuinely lost track of how many courses we had and somehow we still ended up trying every item from the separate à la carte menu afterward because everything was so thoughtful and delicious. The meal beautifully blends medicinal cuisine principles with modern Kyoto dining in a way that feels deeply intentional without ever feeling overly performative. The setting was unforgettable: an intimate 8-seat counter inside an authentic Kyoto home, with an incredibly warm and welcoming chef and staff. It felt like discovering something truly local and deeply rooted in Kyoto rather than a restaurant designed around tourism. Completely unique and absolutely worth seeking out. I visited this restaurant to try their breakfast, which is exclusively available on weekends. The space is a beautifully renovated kominka (traditional Japanese house) with a luxurious layout that separates the counter-seating room from the table-seating room. The atmosphere is serene and incredibly pleasant—a perfect way to start the morning. The Menu for the Evening: • Rooibos Tea with Chamomile, Cardamom, and a hint of Sandalwood • Seasonal Yakuzen (Medicinal) Congee • 8-Year Perpetual Yakuzen Soup • Onsen Tamago (Slow-cooked Egg) with Yakuzen Dashi Soy Sauce • Spanish Mackerel Confit • Strawberries and Duck Ham with Kyoto Vegetables This menu is a perfect match for a quiet morning in Kyoto. Every dish is meticulously crafted with great attention to detail, and the focus on Yakuzen (medicinal cooking) gives it a truly unique identity. It was a breakfast that engaged both the palate and the senses, especially with the calming aromas. I left feeling refreshed, light, and healthy. I’m definitely looking forward to returning for a full course dinner next time. Thank you for the wonderful experience!
