If you don't like dried meats don't even bother coming here , if you do you're welcome to read the rest of this. Seems kind of upscale, but really isn't. A lot of people will be dressed up and lot of people will look like morning joggers. The staff are super friendly and proactive. I don't think my glass of water ever had the chance to be empty . This is a great place to talk and eat, just order the Mixto and it'll feed anywhere from 2-4 people (it comes with this really nice jam, these amazing roasted nuts, and bread that really makes everything come together). I ate the: - Serrano: A thin cut that has a bit of bite to it - Chorizo: Super thin cuts that were good, but not my favorite thing on charcuterie board - Surryano: A super rich fatty cut of pork that I think was my favorite - Carolina Moon: A really flavorful and slightly sweet cheese that's kind of like Brie (I think their cheeses are seasonal, but I'm not sure) - Pan con Tomate: 2 amazing slabs of sour dough that honestly doesn't need the tomato to make it better. I was really surprised by how good it was - Almejas: Probably the most underwhelming thing I've had, the clams were a little bitter and fishy but not bad overall - Chocolate Mousse: I mean dessert always tastes good, but the flavor is super inconsistent. Some bites had me saying "Wow" and others had me thinking "Where ". Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: $30–40

Mateo Bar de Tapas is an excellent restaurant that I highly recommend. Situated in the heart of downtown Durham, the restaurant has delicious Spanish and Southern cuisine in a chic yet cozy atmosphere. I adored the décor, and the employees were very welcoming. My party and I ordered various tapas to share with the table: the pulpo a la plancha (grilled octopus), ensalada pipirrana, calamares fritos (fried calamari), and the “mixto” option for the cheese and jamón charcuterie platter. For the platter, we ordered serrano and chorizo for our two jamón options alongside the Manchego and Carolina Moon cheeses. The food was served as it was prepared; we would have a couple tapa plates at a time. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate mousse, crème brûlée, and cappuccinos. The cappuccinos were amazing and a wonderful way to end a lovely meal. Though somewhat expensive, I felt the prices were worth the excellent service and the high quality (and very reasonable quantity) of the food. Mateo Bar de Tapas is a deservingly popular restaurant, so I would recommend making a reservation several days in advance, if not more. In terms of parking, there is a small lot right next to the restaurant. That said, parking in Durham can be sometimes tricky as downtown is often crowded in the evening with Durham residents enjoying all their city has to offer! My party and I used a rideshare app for transportation to and from the restaurant, which proved to be very convenient for us.
