Minami. A Little Jewel in Asakusa. This is my 2nd visit. It’s amazing that a small place like Minami can give me so much “wow”!! There is so much to say about Minami. Firstly I would like to comment about the owner aka Master. He remembers me as I walked in. We exchanged a few memorable words and as usual he was super friendly. Most of the conversation is subtle. He would give me my private time and not disturb my dinner. As for the food, well, it impressed me the last time, it continue to impressed me this round. First, we were served with “on the house” starter - boiled clams with spring onion. It was mildly flavoured with miso and tsuyu(as how I tasted it) the fresh flavour of the clam is significant, you can taste it. I loves it. Secondly, we orders 3 starter. A tsukemono, Morokyu and Yaki Ginako. The tsukemono(Japanese pickle) is special picked by Master. It’s so good that my wife ended order second serving. Morokyu kyuri(Morokyu miso from Gin San Jinja as explained by Master) is so special. The fermented bean umami is strong and refreshingly delicious with the cucumber. In autumn season, Yaki Ginako is a must to order to pair with alcohol drinks. The Ginako is soft, chewy, not bitter in the core. It is just lightly pan fry with a little oil and sprinkle with salt, makes the dish a taste of autumn. Lovely. Then we order a Yaki Gindara(grilled cod fish). You can tell the fish is fresh as the oily and sweet Gindara with umami from the miso is so good. Mid way my wife ask for a sake to pair with Gindara. Master recommend us a few sake, and pointed out a subtlety umami and smooth Hidakami sake. We love the sake. After the Gindara, we order another two more dish before the finale. deep fried Nankotsu(chicken cartilage) and a Agesaba suaji(fried Saba mackerel with Yuzu vinaigrette sauce) The Nankotsu is unstoppable. It’s a small bites like chicken popcorn. crispy batter, crunchy fresh chicken cartilage, mildly seasoned. Goes very well with beer. The Agesaba is also very lightly fried. The fish is fresh and has a sweet meat. It goes very well with the yuzu vinaigrette sauce with some chopped fresh onions. Both dish are memorable. I will be in my order list when I visit Minami next round. Finally, we end our dinner with 2 Kamameshi. A autumn flavour(recommend by Master) and an Oyster flavour. Both are so so good. As described in so many review here, Minami’s Kamameshi is the best. The tsuyu and Kombu broth is not overpowering the core ingredient. While here in Minami, the highlight is the core ingredient, You get the freshness of core ingredient, the rice that pairs with it and the sauce in the rice. Last night Master recommend us Autumn flavour Kamameshi, a mixture of Marron nuts, and sweet potato(I think this is the core) although Marron nuts is sweet and has a smokiness flavour, it is mild compare to soy sauce or Kombu. Hence, the sauce cannot overpower the Marron otherwise, the Marron will not shine out. What Master did, he control the sauce when cooking the rice, ensuring how much to put so that I will not overpower but compliment the core ingredient. Amazing. That is why I term Minami “A Small Little Jewel in Asakusa. It is a small little diner place mainly to serve’s the resident living around Minami. At times there are locals or Maiko chan dine here. They can be friendly depending on their mood. There is only 10-11 seats in this small little place. Not too tight and can seat comfortably. Good enough size for Master to manage. Master don’t speak English. So, if you are visiting a country that don’t speak English, you should learn a little of the local languagedon’t expect the local to speak your language. So, if you don’t smoke, please don’t mind others, especially the local resident who visit this place more times than you do! This visit, I was made known that Minami now has English Menu, specifically, after my first review back in 2022, there are foreign customer visited this place. Master said, he created the English menu ever since. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: ¥9,000–10,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4
