I am from South Louisiana, and love the variety of cuisines that can be found there, but I don't know a lot about Russian food. My friend, (who also doesn't know a lot about Russian/Eastern European cuisine) and I were visiting the city for her birthday weekend. We looked online at the menu for Red Tavern, thought it sounded terrific, and found out that the dishes we ordered  certainly lived up to the hype! From the moment we walked into the warm, charming, cozy yet spacious restaurant, we were hooked. Of course, we had to have a bottle of the dry red organic house wine, which was was absolutely delicious. I'm not going to pretend to be great at describing wine, because if I say it's dry and light, you'll think either "fruity "  or "beaujolais ," maybe, but it's not either. It's just really nice and clean and pairs wonderfully with anything,, probably. We had the cucumber salad with smetana (a very light cream/yogurt) and dill and Kalamata olives for starters, which turned out to be the perfect thing to pair with the beef stroganoff, which has nothing to do with noodles, and everything to do with a puff pastry and  kasha. Oh. My. Lord. Since it was her birthday, we were forced to get the Napoleon cake to finish feast. Can you tell we're all about the cream and the puff pastry? Next time we go, I'm gonna get the  golubtzy (cabbage stuffed with beef, rice, and vegetables), and try the borscht. Can't wait!
