I went to Rock Steady - Atlanta with friends Friday night to celebrate my best friend's birthday. What started off as a positive first impression ended with feelings of disappointment and the reason for the rating of three is because the manager, Andre attempted to make it right at the end of dinner. The ambiance is a vibe, 5 stars for sure! Before the birthday girl made her reservation, she did a ton of research, spoke with a manager, Kaila to seek confirmation around parking, splitting checks and grace period. She gave us the FULL rundown before we arrived, so I came with cash, prepared to valet and cover my meal, since they told her the check could be split up to four times and there would be more than four of us. I also did my own research here on Yelp before arriving to help me decide on food and drinks. Upon arrival, the valet was very friendly. Valet is $20. The doorman was also nice. The bday girl arrived first and I met her in the front area. The rest of the group arrived a few minutes later and the hostess offered to take photos of us before taking us to our table. That was much appreciated. Once she sat us, we waited for a few minutes and our server, Kaila came over. The bday girl confirmed that the party would be 5 instead of 8 and there was no problem. Our sever was nice initially but we experienced a few mishaps as the night went on. Kaila took our drink orders. I ordered a Sprite (it was $5 and came with a champagne flute, a little bit of ice & the can). Three of my friends ordered alcoholic drinks (Patron margarita and Caribbean drinks with rum/tequila). They stated that their drinks were too strong & not good. The price for alcoholic drinks were in the $16-20 range. Next, we put in appetizers. Three of us ordered the crispy beef empanadas and we also ordered jerk wings and lamb egg rolls. The crispy beef empanadas included Mojo Rojo sauce drizzled heavily on top. It had a strong hot wing sauce smell that was off putting. I liked them, but wish that I would have known that it did not come on the side. I had concerns about the spice level because of the scent, but Kaila assured me that it was not and she was right. It was mild. I would recommend this app, but would get the sauce on the side next time. For my entree, I ordered the 72-hour jerk marinated chicken, sweet plantains, collard greens and dri kole (Haitian-inspired rice/beans rice) with jerk bbq sauce. I asked Kaila if I could substitute the collards for another item and she said there is not many options for substitution. The chicken lacked flavor and seasoning and was overcooked. The best parts of the dish were the side of jerk sauce, sweet plantains and rice. I did not like the collards or the red onion-like garnish that they put on the chicken. The meal was a HUGE disappointment. It took our server a long time to come back after we received the food. Other staff cleared dishes from our table twice before she came back. I needed salt for my chicken. By the time I got it, most of my food lost warmth. A friend also put in a dessert order for bread pudding and we waited for 30 minutes and it did not come out. While eating and waiting, we noticed complimentary birthday cake come out for birthday girls at other tables (at least 3 times) and wanted to experience that for our table. Unfortunately, we had to ruin the surprise and ask Kaila, since it was not clear if Kaila was going to ever bring out the dessert for the birthday girl, since she forgot the bread pudding and disappeared for long periods of time. After that, Kaila brought out a small birthday cake. Finally, she brought a combined check for our full table's orders. We asked if we could have the checks split up, since we had four different orders. Kaila said that we could only evenly split the tab. We were all frustrated. I explained that we were told that we can split the checks up to four times. I had cash to pay for my items, so there would not be more than four credit cards. We did not understand the issue with separating the items based on the food and beverages that we consumed. She said the system would not allow her to do it any other way but evenly, and offered to get a manager. I asked her to bring the manager over. His name was Andre. He was very polite and listened as I explained the issues (forgotten desserts, wait time, splitting checks plus showing the evidence from the birthday girl's confirmation from the manager that this would not be an issue). He apologized and stated that he would ensure our checks were split correctly. Kaila brought out individual checks and complimentary champagne per courtesy of Andre for the inconvenience. He also offered to show us the lounge upstairs. This is my reason for a 3 star review instead of a 2 star review. The lounge was a bit crowded and the security was rude, so we left. The overall experience left something to be desired. I am willing to give it another chance, but not in a hurry to come back either.
