This is not my first time here. They were out of a few things I wanted to order. The food is still only okay. It was exiting to see lotus root in the miso soup, until, unfortunately, I realized it was heavily sweetened and even made the miso taste a bit sweet. Surprisingly, the grilled octopus was my favorite this time. Perfectly cooked, tender and savory with a bit of a spicy sauce. The scallop noodles are so mid it saddens me. Two very small, delicately fried scallops and a mini third tasted great, but served over not very special or flavorful noodles makes it a pass for me. In terms of atmosphere, I don’t like the way it smells inside, kind of like sewer water and it’s quite uncomfortable with wobbly tables outside, which is also loud and people from the bar next door smoking outside was gross to breath. Premium set is good but feel like it’s overpriced. Ordered 3 different ramen, all terrible, don’t have any flavor. Food: 3 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4 Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $70–80

We tried Ryota in Chicago and absolutely loved it. From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding. Our server was incredibly kind and friendly, taking the time to explain every type of fish that was served, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was quick without ever feeling rushed. We ordered the Chirashi Bowl, and it was packed with incredibly fresh, high-quality fish—perfect for sharing between two people. Every bite was delicious, and the freshness really stood out. The highlight for me was the unagi nigiri. It was my first time trying unagi, and I instantly became a fan. It was perfectly prepared, with a great balance of flavors and texture, and easily one of the best bites of the meal. They also have an impressive cocktail menu, although we didn’t get the chance to try any this time. We’ll definitely be back for that. Overall, it was an amazing dining experience, and I’d easily recommend Ryota to anyone looking for one of the best Japanese restaurants in Chicago.
