I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. On such a beautiful day, my boyfriend, our two dogs, and I decided to dine outdoors. However, upon entering the restaurant to request a table for outdoor seating, we were met with refusal from the manager to accommodate our dogs. This was particularly frustrating considering that many other establishments in the area allow dogs in their outdoor spaces. When I inquired about the reasoning behind this decision, the manager cited concerns about employee allergies. Despite offering to keep our dogs in a designated area away from staff, we were still denied seating. To the store owner: If your establishment cannot be inclusive and accommodating to people who wish to dine with their pets in the outdoor area you have set up, perhaps reconsider offering outdoor seating altogether. Disappointed with our experience, we ended up dining across the street at "White Maple Cafe," where we were warmly welcomed. Our server, Heather, provided exceptional service, and the food, including their incredible pumpkin crème brûlée, exceeded our expectations. Service: 1

Bait-and-Switch. Shumi circulated, via email, an announcement that stated: "Celebrate Shumi Japanese Cuisine's 37th anniversary with a special offer! "One Complimentary special omakase for your partner" when you order one special omakase. Don't miss out on this Fantastic Deal!" Our friends forwarded to us the announcement and we made dinner reservations for 4 for July 25, 2023. We called the restaurant a day before and inquired whether there are any special restrictions in place for a promotional special omacase dinner, and were told no restrictions as long as you make reservations. After driving for 30 minutes we arrived to the restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant we immediately stated to the waitress that we are here for a special omacase offer, i.e., a complimentary special omacase when you buy one for $140. We were shown to a regular table which immediately arose a suspicion because all the omacases, we have ever had, took place at the counter. Any Japanese food lover knows that omacase is not served at the table away from a chef. We repeated again, that we are here for a special omacase "deal". In the meantime, the waitress opened a bottle of wine we brought with us ignoring out repeated statements regarding a special omacase deal. When we became sufficiently insistent, a so-called manager showed up and asked us to prove that we received the offer directly from the restaurant, and not from somebody we know. We tried to reason with him showing him the text of the offer and explaining that nowhere in the offer it was mentioned regarding the restriction he was trying to enforce. My friend even showed an email that he received directly from the restaurant. The manager tried to tell him it came from somebody else. It was becoming quite clear that the "special anniversary offer" was designed to lure people to the restaurant and deny them an opportunity to have a "special offer". Many people, once already seated, will probably remain thus providing the restaurant with an additional income achieved by means that we should collectively reject. A typical Bait-And-Switch. Towards the end of the discussion, there was the whole crowd of restaurant employees around us. We told them that we would share our sorry experience with diners at large-they could not care less. We got up, plugged our wine bottle, and left in disgust. Needless-to-say, this was the last time we visited this establishment. There is no need to patronize a restaurant that, in our opinion, resorts to a Bait-and-Switch tactic. Let's show to them that by power of social media diners can have a voice, and a loud one at that. We should spend our hard-earned dollars in excellent establishments like Soma and Minka in Fort Lee.
