The Harp might honestly be the best neighborhood pub in Brookland... wait, it’s basically the only neighborhood pub in Brookland. The food is consistently good, the Guinness is properly poured, the bartenders know their craft, and the staff somehow manages to stay composed and welcoming even when the place gets absolutely packed. It has a bit of that warm, lived-in Irish pub atmosphere, but like other newer DC pubs, it feels a bit manufactured. I mean, I may get a lot of criticism for this, but is it okay to be bothered that there's a Republic of Ireland flag hanging from the rafters along with a poster on the wall that says "Straight Out of Belfast?" Or that they have Tottenham, Man U, Celtic, and about a dozen other football clubs flags hanging up? I get it. The pub is not actually in Ireland. It holds no real allegiance to any political position or sports fan base. But that's kind of the point and what I mean by manufactured; it's like an Irish Fridays. What also needs to be said, though, is that the biggest issue with this establishment is not the kitchen, the bar program, or the service. It is the unavoidable reality of being located near Catholic University. A portion of the student crowd that rolls through there behaves like absolute "see you next Tuesdays;" loud, entitled, oblivious to the people around them, occasionally rude to bartenders and other patrons, and seemingly unfamiliar with the concept that other people exist in the space too. To be clear, that is not a criticism of The Harp itself. If anything, it’s a credit to the staff that they handle that crowd as professionally and patiently as they do. The place remains absolutely worth visiting, especially if you want a genuine neighborhood pub instead of another sterile, over-designed DC cocktail spot pretending to have character.
