This isn't the first time I have taken lunch at the Maytime. Indeed, it used to be my "local", though it wasn't then as good as you will find it today. A really cosy dining room, looking out to the fine garden, or what might be called Swinbrook High Street, though it isn't a high street at all but another gorgeous Cotswolds lane. The food is unquestionably better than I can remember it, and for what is primarily a pub one can have no complaints. However, my sirloin steak, asked for medium rare, was medium to well-done, and what is more simple for a kitchen to produce than a grilled steak? The salad that came with it was very good. I have a feeling, according to my lunch partner, that the fish is a better bet here than the meat, but perhaps I should have just been more adventurous and not ordered the steak. For all this, I would return to the Maytime and order something a little more testing for the kitchen, to see how they would cope with that. I enjoyed the quietness of the dining room (it makes such a change in a pub-diner), and its attractiveness. The wine was very good indeed (Classico Chianti), and the selection of cheeses was as good as I have been offered in far more expensive and elite restaurants. Give it a try and see if you agree. Places such as The Maytime Inn should be patronised and encouraged, even if my meal could have been better. LM.
