Stopped twice in the last week as a half way break on a long journey and was very pleased with the experience. Staff were very polite and friendly and have to mention the excellent quality of the food served in the cafe upstairs. If we lived locally we would most definitely be regular visitors for a browse and a bite to eat.

I love my old disused stations and this one did not disappoint. Visited yesterday on the 18th November and had a good look around. The cafe looked lovely and so did the little independent shopping outlets situated within. The station building is striking and is put to good use. It was built in 1860 and a new station was built to replace this one. Today the platform faces the road which replaced the line in the early 90s. Worth a look, plenty of car parking spaces too.

Having read some of the five star reviews for food I was looking forward to our first visit to The Old Station. Parking was plentiful and the olde worldly appearance a homage to a simpler time. Very quaint. Having made our way upstairs we went to the serving area. There were no other customers waiting. A young man with dark hair was busily ticking something off on a list for about 3-4 minutes without looking up, or acknowledging me." Be with you in a minute" sort of thing. Nope. No eye contact. I had finally perfected Harry Potters invisibility cloak. I knew I had cracked it because another lady member of staff walked right past me. Suddenly however it must have slipped: " What can I get you" he mumbled. No " Sorry to have kept you waiting". I was, it appears somewhat of an inconvenience. A customer! How dare they grace our hallowed ground was the impression I got. Anyway- food was ordered. Cod and Chips with peas (£12) and an omlette and chips (£12) Not cheap. They arrived in a similar lacklustre manner to the ordering process with no niceties or pleasant chit chat. I saw the cod was a bit on the small side and was breaded. The menu above the serving area didn't mention that. It was sort of okay- nothing to shout home about. Chips a bit dry and overdone. As was the (breaded) cod. My wifes omlette was greasy as too much oil had been used. I have been a bit generous with the three out of five stars as I could have caught the staff and chef on a bad day. I won't know because I won't be visiting again. Which is a shame. Back to Charlies and the steak and ale pie!
