After several visits to the newer Roncesvalles location, I finally made it to the original Tibet Cafe and Bar in Kensington Market in January, then returned a few days ago. The restaurant is very thin, with a small bar in the middle where I sat the first time, a few tables and a tv up front, and a seating area at the back where I sat on my recent visit. The decor is gold and brown with exposed brick and a few paintings and prints, dark wood furniture and low lighting. There was classic rock playing at the bar the first time, but Tibetan music playing in the back room the second. The service was fast and very friendly, both with the bartender who was newly arrived from Tibet, and with the owners on both visits. At the bar, I had the fried beef momos and a Tyskie beer then a cup of butter tea to go. I had the mokthuk soup and tingmo this last time with my butter tea, both bills totaling to $17. All of the food was very good: the fried momos were firm but not stiff; the soup had vegetables and small momos in it, and it was hot in temperature (good for a cold evening meal) but not very spicy; the tingmo (2 steamed buns) were soft enough to tear apart easily, and came with butter which was new for me. Other menu items include a variety of steamed momos, chili chicken, other soups, some thai and italian dishes, and a few Canadian dishes. The Saturday special was pork chops with a fried egg and rice for $10. There is also an espresso machine for various hot drinks, and a selection of smoothies and milkshakes. The bar seemed to have a good selection of alcohol, and prices are good, only $5.50 for my imported beer. Overall, another great addition to my list of Tibetan restaurants to choose from.
