The Black Grilled Eel (their most popular dish) is deeply caramelised with a beautifully crispy, fragrant skin. It has a strong authentic smoky charcoal aroma since the eel is grilled over charcoal. The White Eel (Shiraki) is prepared pan-fried style. The texture is lighter, and the bones are crispy, that's their signature dish. We were glad we ordered the Black Eel Bento with rice and added the White Eel à la carte. The rice soaked up the caramelised unagi sauce made it flavourful. The restaurant is a small, humble family-run spot. It gets crowded with queues due to the limited seating on weekends. We visited on a weekday at 11am, so there was no queue and mostly local diners. So far, this is the best grilled eel meal we’ve had in Japan — and anywhere else. There is also a parking garage right next to the restaurant, which makes it convenient if you're driving. I heard that the eel restaurants around here were delicious, so I stopped by for lunch while on a family trip. I was very grateful that Uotora-san was open while some shops were not open as it was the end of the year (December 29th). Both the rice bowl and the hitsumabushi were incredibly delicious, and definitely the best eel I've ever eaten! Until the main course arrived, I had the Hansuke nabe, which was also my first time eating it, and it was delicious. If I come to Gujo again, I would definitely like to stop by this restaurant. Thank you for your meal. Service: Dine in Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ¥4,000–5,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: 上丼, 魚寅まぶし ひつまぶし, 赤白ひつまぶし
