My husband and I usually celebrate birthdays and anniversaries by trying high-end restaurants, so he suggested Valhalla for my birthday after hearing so much hype around it. Unfortunately, for us, the experience didn’t quite live up to that hype. We arrived about 7 minutes early, and the first thing the host said was something along the lines of, “Oh, you’re just early.” It may not have been intentional, but the way it was said felt a little awkward, almost as if arriving a few minutes early was somehow an inconvenience. Once we were seated, there was a birthday card waiting for me, which was a very thoughtful and appreciated touch. The seating itself, however, was probably one of my biggest disappointments. There is a long counter where guests can watch the chefs prepare and plate the food, which seems like a big part of the Valhalla experience. We were seated at one of four seats facing the bar/hot cooking area and what looked like a refrigerator with fish. It might sound like a small detail, but for a restaurant where the open-kitchen experience is part of the attraction, our seats felt much less interesting and immersive. We also had a surprisingly difficult time hearing the explanations of the dishes. The music wasn’t extremely loud, but between the acoustics and where we were sitting, we often couldn’t fully understand what was being explained to us. Service was another area that didn’t quite match what we expect from a restaurant at this level. A few times we finished our drinks and waited around 10 minutes before eventually having to ask if we could order another one. No one proactively checked whether we wanted a refill or another drink. At a tasting-menu restaurant, I expected the service to feel a little more attentive. There were definitely some highlights in the food. I really enjoyed the surf course we started with, and the beef breast and scallop were both excellent. Those dishes were memorable. Desserts were very good too, Pink Pineapple and doughnut were my favorites. On the other hand, there were a few courses, particularly the prawn noodles and pea latte, that just didn’t work for me. Overall, I think Valhalla has a lot of potential, and there were moments we genuinely enjoyed. But compared with other high-end and tasting-menu restaurants we’ve visited, the overall experience—especially the seating, service, and consistency of the dishes—just wasn’t at the same level for us. For a birthday dinner that we were really looking forward to, we left feeling somewhat disappointed and not quite understanding the level of hype around the restaurant. Dined here solo on Friday night in August while visiting Chicago and had a truly tremendous meal. The pacing and unique flavors were incredible. I did the anything but wine pairing and on multiple occasions throughout the meal was left stunned, had to close my eyes with the flavors I was experiencing. An unforgettable dining experience from when I sat at the counter to the end. I would reccommend this restaurant to anybody in a heartbeat. Certainly get the anything but wine pairing too. Unfortunately my reservation was for 8pm and I was not seated until about 8:50. This is not always in the restaurant's control, and I have empathy for this, but with the price point it was a slight miss. Some sort of discount or added tasting menu item would have been a nice touch to remedy the delay. Outside of this, 5 stars. Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5
