Lisbon is a truly ancient location, even more, it is one of the oldest cities in Europe (only Athens is considered older). Archaeological remains indicate that this area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The city was founded by Phoenician sailors and merchants in 1200 BCE. It's interesting that Lisbon was built on seven hills.

The name of the capital of Portugal can mean a safe harbour in Phoenician or it can be derived from the Roman word Olisipo (there are numerous legends saying that the city was established by a mythical hero Ulysses or Odysseus). The locals can be called either Lisboetas or Alfacinhas ("little lettuce") which is related to the time when the only available vegetables were lettuce.

Portugal was such a powerful country where the Age of Discovery started in the early 15th century, however, it was so seriously damaged by the catastrophic earthquake in 1755.

Nowadays, Lisbon is a top tourist attraction. It's a must to visit this city and admire the stunning scenery, enjoy the most eclectic collection of museums, watch impressive sunsets, ride in typical yellow trams up and down the hill through historical neighbourhoods and degust tasty dishes at eco-friendly Lisbon restaurants serving organic dishes, using sustainable products and systems, and living in harmony in nature.

Wow, Lisbon has some amazing eco-conscious restaurants! One that caught my eye was Belcanto, which offers contemporary Portuguese cuisine using local products of high quality. With two MICHELIN stars and ranking 42nd on The World's 50 Best Restaurants List, it definitely lives up to its reputation. I can't wait to try dishes like the garden of the goose that laid the golden eggs and scarlet shrimp curry with mushrooms! It's great to see restaurants using sustainable products and systems while still providing delicious food.
