In case the rain took you by surprise during the promenade around College Street, stop by this bar. Italian cuisine is well-cooked at DaNico. It's a Michelin one-star bar, this award is usually given for providing great food.

A MICHELIN star: cuisine of great finesse. Worth the step!

DaNico is a unique dining experience. The restaurant is nestled inside a former bank building built in the early 1900s; wine is even stored in the vault. The sumptuous space features dark colors, soaring ceilings, bold artwork and luxe tabletop implements. The ace team sets a sophisticated tone, without making it all feel too serious... More info

Food was okay and our waitress was nice but they were understaffed, so service was very slow and pretty underwhelming. Spacing between our dishes was a bit long and we had to ask for our wine to be refilled (we had a bottle). Have never had that happened at a restaurant at this price point in Toronto. Another very odd thing was that my reservation was cancelled AFTER we finished dining and paid. I suspect they know when they’ve done a shoddy job and are cancelling resos so we can’t leave a verified negative review on OpenTable. That’s a scummy practice and as such I wouldn’t recommend this resto. Food: 3 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 3 Price per person: $100+

I really wanted to like the food at DaNico, but unfortunately, I found the overall dining experience quite underwhelming. I’d only recommend dining here if you’re prepared to spend at least two hours minimum at the restaurant. We waited approximately 20 to 30 minutes between each course, which felt especially long given the portion sizes. We didn’t even choose the elaborate menu option so I couldn’t imagine if we did. Most dishes were only a few bites, so you’d finish eating fairly quickly and then be left waiting for the next course to arrive. Unfortunately, some of the dishes also arrived cold and quite hard. When we brought this up, we were told that this was the Chef’s intended preparation and that it was “al dente.” While I appreciate that certain dishes are intentionally prepared differently, the explanation didn’t quite justify the experience for us. I didn’t realize “al dente” meant a cold dish that was meant to be hot. Where DaNico really shines is the service. The staff were incredibly attentive, and the restaurant seemed appropriately staffed. There was always someone nearby if we needed assistance, which made the service feel seamless and well managed. The washroom on the main floor was also spectacular. Also, I found it quite strange that my OpenTable reservation was cancelled by the restaurant after my dinner had already ended. But either way, DaNico won’t be on my list of recommendations. Food: 1 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4
