We had a good evening at Oro Bistrot overall, but unfortunately the experience didn’t quite live up to our expectations, particularly given the price point of the tasting menu. The rooftop setting and views are beautiful, and the Old Fashioneds were excellent. The steak was easily the best course of the tasting menu and was very good. Beyond that, though, I thought most of the food was fairly mediocre for this level of restaurant. The pasta was probably the biggest disappointment. I understand that Italian pasta is properly served al dente, but this went beyond al dente for me and was simply too hard. We had €20 pasta near the Colosseum earlier in our trip that I thought was noticeably better. The gluten-free pasta was also disappointing. I appreciate that they accommodated a gluten intolerance, but the substitute was a basic round noodle that reminded us more of something you’d buy at Trader Joe’s than what we’d expect from an upscale Italian tasting menu. Other restaurants we visited in Italy were able to offer gluten-free pasta that still looked and tasted like authentic Italian pasta. The other disappointment was the lack of acknowledgment of our anniversary. We had made it known that we were celebrating, and while the host who checked us in on the first floor kindly wished us a happy anniversary, that was the only acknowledgment the entire evening. I wasn’t expecting anything extravagant or necessarily complimentary, but when you’re doing a tasting menu at this price point, at a restaurant designed for special occasions, I think it’s reasonable to expect a little more attention to those details. For comparison, we also celebrated at Zass in Positano, a Michelin-starred restaurant where, if anywhere, you might expect the atmosphere to be more formal or even a little snobby. Instead, they couldn’t have been warmer. They surprised us with two glasses of Prosecco and a dessert with “Happy Anniversary” written on it. I wasn’t expecting Oro to do the same, but the contrast in hospitality was noticeable. Even simply having our server acknowledge our anniversary would have gone a long way. Overall, the views are fantastic, the cocktails were excellent, and the steak was very good. But the rest of the tasting menu was just okay, and the service lacked the personal touches I would expect at this price point. It wasn’t a bad experience by any means, but compared with several other meals we had throughout Italy, it didn’t quite deliver the level of food or hospitality we expected. Hi Logan, thank you for taking the time to describe your experience in such detail and for acknowledging several positive aspects of the evening, from the views and cocktails to the steak course, which you particularly enjoyed. We’re sorry, however, that the tasting menu as a whole did not fully meet your expectations. When it comes to pasta, texture can of course involve a degree of personal preference, but if the cooking felt beyond al dente and simply too firm, that is feedback worth taking seriously. The same applies to the gluten-free option: adapting a tasting menu for an intolerance can sometimes require a different pasta format, but it should never leave the impression of being a less considered or lower-level substitute.Regarding your anniversary, we’re pleased that it was acknowledged when you arrived, but we also understand the point you’re making. Complimentary gestures or special extras are not automatic or guaranteed, yet when we know guests are celebrating an important occasion, greater continuity in that attention throughout the evening can certainly make a difference. Your feedback on this is valuable. We also respect your comparison with other experiences during your trip, while naturally recognising that different restaurants may have very different concepts, formats and styles of hospitality. Our prices are always clearly communicated and reflect the cuisine, service, research, setting and overall experience, although we understand that perceived value ultimately depends on how convincingly each of those elements comes together for every guest. We’re glad the evening was not a negative experience overall, but we’re sorry it fell short of the level of completeness you were expecting for such a special occasion.Oro Bistrot
