Vanilla hot chocolate

Most of us associate hot chocolate with pleasant moments, when we warm up on a cold, snowy day. Originally, today’s ultimate comforting drink was cold and spicy. Around 2500 years back, Mayans would prepare ground cacao beans and mix them with cold water, chili, and cornmeal. Only 1000 years later, these magic beans were introduced into Spain, and that is where the delicacy we know was created. Max Brenner – a world-known talented chocolatier – on his trip to Jamaica several years ago, discovered that there are multiple ways to use the whole cacao fruit in cooking, which is extremely healthy and tasty as well. That is the main idea behind his cafe and shop, Blue Stripes in New York. Here, you can get nutritious cacao water, whole cacao chocolate bars, dried cacao fruit, and various kinds of granola. For his extra rich and smooth version of hot chocolate, Max adds creme anglaise to the mix. Let’s find out the preparation sequence of the world’s best drink with a recipe shared by our modern Willy Wonka.

Cooking directions

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup whipping cream
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 3 egg yolk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste (can substitute with vanilla extract)
  • 3 tbsp 70% chocolate chips
  • 3 tbsp 100% chocolate chips
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Step 1. Add about 90% of the milk and all the cream to a small pot. Bring to a simmer on medium heat.

Step 2. In a bowl, mix yolks, sugar, vanilla, and the rest of the milk.

Step 3. Add half of the hot mixture into the bowl, whisk thoroughly, and pour the mix back into the pot again. Keep whisking the liquid, otherwise, the yolks might cook.

Step 4. Cook the cream on low-medium heat till it becomes thicker while stirring it.

Step 5. Add chocolates and salt to a measuring cup.

Step 6. Through a fine strainer, pour the hot mixture into the cup over the chocolate and mix it.

Step 7. Pour into serving glasses.

Tip: For a prettier appearance, you can make a chocolate powder rim on your serving glasses.

If you are planning to visit New York, think about the attractions that you personally would love to explore the most. The city has so much to offer, and it can get really difficult to check all the boxes. Better, see less of things, but have a more relaxed time in The Big Apple. And don’t forget to drop by Blue Stripes for a cup of finger-licking good hot chocolate one morning.
