The original version of this Cuban dish was created by chef Nitza Villapol in 1954. It has both Latin American and Cuban roots, and it is also known as Ernst Hemingway’s favorite Cuban dish. For a deliciously saucy Mexican variant of this dish, you will need good quality ground beef, pepper, onion and spices, and cooking it is not rocket science. Picadillo recipe is easy to customize, adding other vegetables and mixing spices, and its rich taste will surely impress your friends and family.
Step 1. Put the Canola oil to a large pan and warm on low heat. Add diced peppers and onion and stir to mix them. Sauté on medium heat until the onion starts to soften.
Step 2. Mash the garlic into paste and put in the pan. Add some salt, garlic powder, onion powder, turmeric and pepper for seasoning. Stir the vegetables in the pan until they are mixed evenly.
Step 3. Put Sofrito, oregano and cumin in the pan and stir. Add beef, allow it to brown and mix with other ingredients. Cover the pan and cook on low heat for 15 minutes.
Step 4. After the mixture simmers, add olives and tomato sauce. Stir the ingredients and cook for 5 minutes in the covered pan.
To serve. Serve as a main dish with white rice or fresh flour tortillas.
